From Becker’s As procedures migrate to the outpatient setting, ASC leaders are seeing cardiology and orthopedics as huge opportunities for growth.

Cardiology procedures received the highest estimated Medicare payment increases in 2021, making it the fastest growing ASC specialty, according to Avanza’s “2022 Key ASC Benchmarks and Industry Figures” report. Orthopedics is the most common specialty for ASCs in 2022, according to March data from the ASC Association.

10 states with the most new ASCs since 2020 — 2 states tied for No. 1 (Becker’s)

The number of ASCs is growing across the U.S. as patients and payers demand more outpatient surgery.

Five states have seen their ASC counts grow by at least 10 percent since 2020, according to CMS data compiled by the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association. Texas and California lead the pack, each with 32 ASCs added since 2020.

Many ASC companies are securing partnerships to bolster value-based care. In May, Brentwood, Tenn.-based Surgery Partners joined with ValueHealth to bring its value-based surgical care to its practices.
